Summer is all about sun, surf, and braais with friends and family.
To help you get the most out of your summer, we found some of our favourite apps to help get you from the beach to the braai and make your summer that much more enjoyable with some of the best music on the planet.
1. Uber
Summer in South Africa is beautiful but, especially, if you’re in Cape Town.
Getting around the Mother City in Cape Town in the summer months can be a bit of a nightmare, because everyone is there.
So, instead of struggling to find parking and worrying about driving home after a few sundowners, get the Uber app on your phone.
Also, this December, Uber has partnered with DSTV to bring you free rides in Cape Town (which makes getting the app even better).
To get 16 free rides in the Cape Town CBD and Atlantic Seaboard areas, here’s what you need to do:
- Open up your Uber app
- Go to ‘Payment’ on the App Menu
- Under ‘Promotions’, click on ‘Add Promo/Gift Code’
- Enter DStv and click on the ADD button
- Once applied successfully, the code will unlock the UberSUMMER vehicle view (close the app and give this 15 minutes to load)
- Once you’re asked to select uberX, uberXL or UberBLACK, swipe right and select UberSUMMER
Some things to note:
- Valid for trips starting and ending in the Cape Town CBD and Atlantic Seaboard
- Thursday 1st December – Friday 30th, 8am to 8pm
- 16 free rides up to R100 each
- UberSUMMER vehicle view will only be visible in the UberSUMMER zone (Cape Town CBD and Atlantic Seaboard)
Available on Android and iOS.
Cost: Free.

2. Google Play Music
Google Play Music is the search giant’s answer to Apple Music and iTunes.
Featuring a redesigned, cleaner layout, the app features the latest songs, and albums, and gives some of the best music recommendations we’ve seen in ages.
Music can be streamed or downloaded and listened to on your phone, tablet, or computer.
Available on Android and iOS.
Cost: Free.
3. Over
Everyone loves taking photos on their phones. But, sometimes we want to do a bit of tweaking to them to add some text and make them extra special.
Over is an app that allows you to add text to your images. You can use it for images you share on your social media feeds or for use in company-related material.
There is also a R7.99 monthly subscription, which unlocks a ton of premium content.
Think of Over as Photoshop on your smartphone (but cooler).
Available on Android and iOS.
Cost: Free on iOS. R56.95 on Android.
4. The Entertainer
The Entertainer partners with business – including restaurants, hotels, salons and more – to bring you special offers.
The offers are usually of the Buy One, Get One Free, variety but they can vary depending on the business.
The entertainer app is available in Dubai, Africa, and Europe, but the offers are specific to your area.
All the offers are valid seven days a week (some minimal exclusion days might apply, such as Public Holidays and other special occasions) for the whole year.
Once you’ve downloaded and registered you’ll get a ‘Try Before You Buy’ option.
If you select this option, you’ll get access to one free trial offer from a selection of Food and Drink outlets.
Available on Android and iOS.
Cost: R495.00

5. Airbnb
Thinking of taking a quick getaway during the summer months, but not keen on spending a fortune on hotel costs?
Airbnb lets you rent either an entire house, apartment, or room for however long you need, whether it be one day or one month.
Once you’ve registered, the app lets you see images of the place you’ll be staying at and also shows you reviews from previous guests, and the total cost of the rental, before you decide whether or not you want to stay there.
Cape Town is also one of the first twelve cities in the Airbnb network to launch Trips, a new way to experience neighbourhoods through the eyes of a local expert.
Available on Android and iOS.
Cost: Free.
