Time To Upgrade? Here’s What You Need To Know

Once you’ve decided which phone to get and which contract you want, upgrading feels like Christmas.

If you’ve never upgraded your contract before, then it can feel like a bit of a confusing nightmare.

Things To Consider When Upgrading

There are a few things to keep in mind when upgrading:

  • You might be required to provide proof of residence (especially if you RICA and get a new SIM card)
  • If you’re upgrading to a more expensive contract, you might have to provide proof of income
  • There might be a migration fee
  • Upgrading your contract is dependent on whether or not you are in good standing with the provider

The Upgrading Process, Per Provider

Here’s what you need to know about upgrading your smartphone contract depending on which network you’re on.

When you join MTN as a Contract Customer, you take out a 24 month contract. From month 21, your contract becomes due for a renewal, which means you can now upgrade your phone and your contract.

Upgrading on MTN can be done online. Here’s how:

Step 1
Check if you qualify for an upgrade by completing the upgrade enquiry form. After you’ve submitted the form, someone will call you and let you know if you qualify. If, for some reason, you don’t qualify, then you’ll receive the future date as to when you do qualify.

Step 2
If you qualify for the upgrade, the fun part begins. Now you get to check out the latest packages and plans on offer.
Once you’ve chosen the best option for you, you can complete the upgrade in one of two ways:

  • Visiting your nearest MTN Store OR
  • Requesting one of MTN’s Upgrade Consultants to contact you for an appointment

When in-store, or when speaking to the Upgrade Consultant, for your own protection, you will need to provide proof of your identity.

If upgrading at a MTN Store, you will receive your new cellphone immediately, subject to stock availability. All Upgrades are subject to stock availability and MTNSP approval. You will be informed of stock availability at the time of upgrading.

Vodacom follows a pretty similar setup to MTN in terms of upgrades.

Upgrading can be done either online or in a store.

What differs is when you can begin your upgrade process.

MTN allows you to upgrade from month 21, but Vodacom only allows you to upgrade from month 22.

To find out whether you are eligible for an upgrade, and which plans or devices you could get, you’ll need to create or login to your online Vodacom account (which can be found here).

Upgrading on the Vodacom website means that your phone will be delivered to you the next day and that you have a 14 day return window.

Cell C

Cell C has a range of contracts running for either 6, 12, 18 or 24 months.

This is when you’d usually be eligible to upgrade on Cell C:

  • End of month 6 on a 6 month contract
  • On month 11 on a 12 month contract
  • On month 16 on a 18 month contract
  • On month 21 on a 24 month contract

If you’re on one of these contracts and you’re not sure whether or not you might be eligible for an upgrade, you can follow these steps:

  • Self-Service IVR – Call 140 and select option 1 for “Manage”; select “Upgrade eligibility”
  • Call 140 – select option 9 to speak to an agent
  • USSD – Dial *147*9# from the cellphone number for which the upgrade query pertains to

Telkom Mobile

Telkom Mobile follows the same 22 month upgrade option as Vodacom.

Telkom usually notifies you (via SMS or phone call) as to when your contract is eligible for upgrade. If you’d like to find out for yourself, however, you’ll have to go into the store or click on their Talk To Us section and get assistance that way.

If you’d like to see which phones are available, the network recommends going onto the Shop section of the website to see which phones, contracts, and deals are currently available.
