by Samsung has taken to its own website to announce that it will be unveiling the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 at multiple events in New York City, London and Rio de Janeiro on August 2nd.
The Samsung Galaxy Note is a successor to the wildly popular Galaxy Note 5 and is expected to implement the now infamous dual-edge display, first made famous with the Galaxy S6 Edge.
If you’re wondering what happened to the Note 6, there isn’t one. Samsung has decided to align its smartphone offerings which will no doubt make marketing a lot easier for the South Korean company.
For months rumours around the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 have been taking on a life of their own online, here’s a wrap-up of our favourites.
- Larger than large – the Note 7 is rumoured to include a massive 6-inch display, bringing it into Nexus 6P territory. Do people really want such a large phone?
- H2 No – following in the steps of the Galaxy S7 / Edge, the Note 7 is expected to be waterproof and dustproof with an IP68 rating. This would make it the first phablet from Samsung to include this.
- Connection – USB type C is rumoured to be the port of choice in the Note 7. This makes sense from a future-proofing perspective as most of the major 2016 handsets have been released with the lightning fast, more user-friendly port. What does this mean for Gear VR compatibility though?
- cRAMming it in – a whopping 6GB RAM is expected to be included in the next Note making you wonder if Samsung wants business users to use their laptops at all.
- Definitely not a chip off the old block – Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 or Samsung’s own Exynos 8893, either way, expect more processing power (and hopefully less battery consumption) than current flagship handsets are providing.
- Eye spy – one of the most interesting rumours is that the Note 7 will feature an iris scanner which could be used as a new security feature. Microsoft has already implemented an iris scanner on its Lumia 950 and 950XL so it will be interesting to see Samsung’s take on this somewhat futuristic technology (if it gets implemented at all).
Despite the plethora of rumours floating around on the internet, one thing is certain, we’ll know everything about the Note 7 in just a few weeks.
