by As South Africa winds down and starts getting into serious festive season mood, YouTube has once again released its annual Rewind. Looking back at the most-watched videos for the year, globally and in South Africa.
This year’s most-watched videos in South Africa had us rolling in the aisles, shaking our heads, gasping in admiration, and getting noticed by none other than Megan Trainor. Judging by the number of comedy and entertainment videos in the mix – 7 out of 10 – South Africans needed a bit of laughter this year.
An Overview Of The Results
Topping the list was The Daily Show – South African President Jacob Zuma and the Panama Papers, by South Africa’s favourite comic son, Trevor Noah. Second up was I’ll beat you from Nigerian channel Mark Angel Comedy, featuring the ever-entertaining Emanuella. Rudi Smit’s flash mob dance video – Me Too – achieved its aim of getting South African talent noticed by Megan Trainor. It proceeded to go viral all over the world. Laura Bretan: 13-year-old opera singer gets the golden buzzer also performed really well. In fact, America’s Got Talent 2016 Auditions had us all in goosebumps and wiping our eyes at Laura’s incredible version of Nessun Dorma.
It wasn’t all light entertainment in the top ten most watched videos, however, a road rage incident in Durban also featured. As did an eNCA Checkpoint episode on Blessers.
Globally, Carpool Karoake made the Rewind list for the second year. Adele Carpool Karaoke racked up a whopping 135m views, making it the most watched YouTube video globally for 2016. Asian viral hit Piko Taro came in second with 93m views for Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen/PIKO-T
