And, more time outside of home means more money out of your pocket. But, if you’re smart about it, you can tick everything off your holiday ‘fun things to do’ list, without breaking the budget.

It may not seem like much, but R85 can go a long way. R85 a month can provide a young family of four with funeral cover. It could also get you 6,6l of unleaded petrol (at R12.79/litre). Depending on what you’re driving, this could literally get you as far as a 100km round trip with a few kilometres to spare.
We’ve found a few fun things to do out in the sun with R85 or less.
1. Take a Hike, a Swim, And a Cliff Jump
The Crystal Pools hike is arguably one of the best kept secret things to do for adventure seekers in South Africa. Situated in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, it’s about a (scenic) hour outside of Cape Town. Trail through the valley, and experience four rock pools and a breathtaking waterfall along the way. Each natural pool offers cliff jumps. R60 (per person) gets you in on a prepaid, pre-booked permit (email your name, group size, contact number and a date to steenbras.naturereserve@capetown.gov.za).
2. Enter a Tropical Paradise
The World of Birds is Africa’s largest bird park. A tropical landscape hidden in the Hout Bay Valley, the park features 400 rare and exotic bird species. It’s open from Monday to Sunday, and costs R85 for adults and R40 for children.
3. A Picnic And a Show
The only thing better than being entertained for under R85 is being entertained for free. Sundays in summer now come with free concerts in De Waal Park. Live music by notable acts like Freshly Ground, Arno Carstens, and others. So you can splurge your R85 on a bottle of wine and some snacks for your picnic basket.
4. (Mini) Golf And Ice Cream
If you want to opt for a more traditional past time, then putt putt and ice cream in Sea Point is a winning option. The Sea Point Promenade not only offers a round of putt putt for R20, but some amazing gelato scoops or an ice cream sandwich at Crumbs & Cream for R35. Mix that with watching the sun set over the ocean, and your day out is priceless.
5. Spot a Hippo in Grassy Park
We kid you not friends. Who would’ve guessed that one of the things to do, just 20 minutes from Cape Town, could include a safari experience? Rondevlei is hidden within the Cape Town suburb of Grassy Park. 256 Species of indigenous plants, and 20 mammal species, including the Cape Grysbok Porcupine, Cape Clawless Otter, Large-Spotted Genet, and yes, hippos. R12 entry fee for adults and R5 for kids. Steal.
