Last month saw just 55 055 vehicles sold across the country with passenger cars and LCV sectors dropping by 7.8 percent. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles dropped by a shocking 11.2 and 17.9 percent.
Naamsa interprets this as a continuous downward trend in business as well as a resilient consumer sentiment, despite car makers attempting to introduce attractive incentive packages during the difficult trading conditions.
The climate in South Africa has not however affected the global market and exports have continued to do well with a 12.3 percent year-on-year growth.
“Whilst still early to understand the full impact of the depreciation of the rand against major currencies, this will add continued pressure on new passenger vehicles and we anticipate that the current year on year declines will continue for the remainder of 2015,” said Nicholas Nkosi of Standard Bank.
WHO WAS AT THE TOP?
The battle of the bakkies seem to have taken a back seat for now as Volkswagen’s Polo Vivo, a well known favourite, claimed the number one position for sales in August.
The Ford Ecosport and Fiesta have since gained popularity with August 2015 sales stats revealing 1027 and 1230 units.
