by South African Airways(SAA) announced on Friday morning that passengers travelling to the US could reschedule their flights.
This comes after US airports have been issuing flight warnings as a result of Hurricane Irma.
Many flights in and around the affected regions have been cancelled.
SAA has alerted passengers that they can reschedule their flights without any further rebooking fee.

How Will This Work?
According to SAA’s media release, there are a number of different routes affected.
“Rebooking assistance will be offered to all South African Airways ticketed customers on flights to the identified destinations via New York and Washington only for travel beginning Wednesday, 06 September 2017 through Tuesday, 12 September 2017; at no additional charge to a later travel date up to and including Tuesday, 19 September 2017.”
If you are affected by the cancellations, you can contact the SAA Office. However, you have to ensure that your flights were booked on SA (083) ticket stock and not on separate tickets of other airlines.
What Are The Rebooking Conditions?
There will be no additional charge for passengers that have to change their flights due to the storms in the US.
There are however a variety of conditions that passengers need to take into consideration. Here is a list of conditions to take into account when rebooking your ticket:
- You may only rebook your ticket on an SAA flight in the same class at no extra charge. This means that you can’t change your economy ticket for a business class ticket;
- You may change the route that you take into the US if you are supposed to come through New York via Washington. This may only apply if you are landing at an SAA gateway;
- Tickets must be re-issued on/before 12 September, 2017;
- Travel must commence on/before 19 September, 2017.

Meanwhile In Other News…
Delta Airlines, unlike other airlines who have cancelled flights, has flown straight into Hurricane Irma.
The pilot of the plane landed in Puerto Rico as the storm was engulfing the island. Just 45 minutes later, the airline was recorded as taking off from the airport with 170 passengers on board.
According to Delta’s Erik Snell, the airline’s crew is the best in the business despite the dangerous conditions.
“They took a hard look at the weather data and the track of the storm and worked with the flight crew and dispatcher to agree it was safe to operate the flight. And our flight and ground crews were incredible in their effort to turn the aircraft quickly and safely so the flight could depart well before the hurricane threat.”
