Moving From Android To iOS?

While you might consider yourself a die-hard Android fan, the time may come when you surprise yourself and choose to make the jump to Apple.

Why Make The Move?

Android is known for its personalisation and variety of devices that use the OS, while Apple’s iOS is only available on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch.

Why then would you want to move from something that’s more open and flexible to something that’s seen as more restrictive?

The answer is simple. Android offers you the ability to make your device more personal and tailored to what you want it to be, but it does not have a seamless end-to-end user experience. This is because the OS and the hardware are not made by the same people. Apple, on the other hand, controls both the hardware and software, which means that the can properly tailor the user experience to be as seamless as possible.

How To Move Operating Systems

Moving between operating systems can be daunting. The biggest concern is losing all of your information that you’ve stored on your phone.

In an effort to make the move as painless as possible, Apple has created an app for Android to help with the move. Called “Move to iOS” the app is available on the Google Play Store.

How The ‘Move To iOS’ App Works

  • Install the Move to iOS app on your Android phone.
  • On your Android device, open the Move to iOS app and tap Continue. Read the terms and conditions that appear. Tap Agree to continue, then tap Next in the top-right corner of the Find Your Code screen.
  • On your iOS device, tap Continue on the screen called Move from Android. Then wait for a ten-digit or six-digit code to appear. If your Android device shows an alert that you have a weak Internet connection, you can ignore the alert.
  • Enter the code on your Android device. Then wait for the Transfer Data screen to appear.
  • On your Android device, select what you want to transfer and tap Next. Then leave both devices alone until the loading bar that appears on your iOS device finishes. Do this even if your Android indicates that the process is complete. The whole transfer can take a while, depending on how much content you’re moving. Here’s what you can transfer: contacts, message history, camera photos and videos, web bookmarks, mail accounts, and calendars. Some of your free apps will transfer if they’re available on both Google Play and the App Store. After the transfer completes, you can download any free apps that were matched from the App Store. Any matched paid apps will appear in your iTunes Wishlist.
  • After the loading bar finishes on your iOS device, tap Done on your Android device. Then tap Continue on your iOS device and follow the onscreen steps to finish setting it up.
  • Make sure that all of your content transferred. If some of it didn’t transfer, you can move that content manually.

That’s it. Apple definitely wants you to join team iOS, so they’ve made moving as easy as possible.

An Alternative Method

If for some reason, the Move to iOS app isn’t transferring your data, there is another way to get your data over to your new iPhone.

Ensure that all the information on your Android device is synced to your Android / Google account. This is the account you would have set up or logged in with when you first set up your Android device.

If all of your pictures and phone numbers and files are synced to Google and Google Drive, then it’s simply a matter of setting up your new iPhone, heading to Settings, and then to Contacts or Calendar to access your information, which you’ve synced with Google.

The only thing that you won’t be able to transfer are all of your WhatsApp messages.

WhatsApp for Android allows you to back your messages up to Google, but WhatsApp for iOS only syncs up with iCloud.

All that’s left is to download and install all your favourite apps to your shiny new iPhone and spend some time getting used to the Apple way of doing things.
