by Huawei has been on a bit of a roll lately.
In 2016 alone, the company has released the Mate 8 (at CES), the MateBook (at Mobile World Congress), the P9 & P9 Plus (in London) and the Nova & Nova Plus (at IFA). Despite all these devices released this year, it seems like the company has one more ace up its sleeve, namely the Mate 9.
Introducing the Mate 9
Originally believed to be announced at CES 2017 in Las Vegas, it now appears that Huawei will be releasing the Mate 9 at an event in Munich, Germany, early next month.
According to an article published by VentureBeat, the handset is expected to come in two variants. A regular version and, what appears to be, a dual-curved display version as well.
According to the article, the dual-curved variant might not see an international release though. It could be limited to customers in the company’s home territory of China.
Rumoured specs for the Mate 9
- A 64-bit, eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 960 system on chip (SoC)
- 5.9-inch screen
- Up to 6GB of RAM and 256GB storage capacity
The dual-curved version is expected to be the higher specced version of the two handsets. It is rumoured to be carrying a quad HD (QHD) display. This unlike the regular variant which will only be carrying a full HD display.
The reason for this is that Huawei has publicly claimed to be developing a Daydream compatible handset. This requires a phone with a higher resolution display than anything Huawei has ever included in a phone to date.

Inspired By The Note 7?
Huawei has made great strides in the past 12 months with regards to hardware design. They’ve also moved up the global smartphone rankings to become the third largest handset manufacturer in the world (behind Apple in second place and Samsung in first). The dual-curved variant of the Mate 9, however, screams Note 7 design, and we can’t help but wonder what Samsung’s reaction will be to this device.
Phone design is becoming increasingly similar, across all manufacturers, but this appears to be a bit too similar.
What we don’t know about the Mate 9 devices is whether or not they will be waterproof (like the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge and Apple’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus). Or, whether or not the dual-curved version will utilise a smaller version of the MatePen which was introduced earlier this year alongside the MateBook.
All will be revealed early on in November.
