Social media was set alight on Monday when racism raised it’s ugly head in the form of a Facebook post by Hout Bay resident, Vanessa Hartley.

The post lamented about, “too many Africans flocking to Hout Bay” and quickly went viral.

“They (are) like stupid animals‚ we should tie them to a rope,” she said, continuing her rant.

The Internet reacted as only it knew how: through the use of humourous tweets. The underlining theme was for holiday makers to reroute their plans from Durban (usually densely populated during Christmas) to Hout Bay.

The ANC and Hout Bay Civic Association have both expressed their intentions to lay a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) against Vanessa for her comments.

The Hout Bay Civic Association opened a case of crimen injuria against her on Monday.

“We’ve got our case number and we’ll be providing the police with statements and a copy of the post,” said Roscoe Jacobs of the Hout Bay Civic Association.

“We will follow up and ensure that the matter is presented before the court .”
