Facebook reveals what the world spoke about in 2015

What a epic year it’s been, from Jon Snow dying on Game of Thrones to the discovery of water on Mars.
Facebook released the data on Wednesday and according to the report, the following topics were hot on everyone’s lips.
10. Charleston Shooting & Flag Debate

On June 17, 9 victims were shot at the historic black church, Emanuel African Methodist Church, in Charleston, South Carolina.
9. Baltimore Protests

The Baltimore protests spurred on by the death of 25 year old, Freddie Gray  who sustained injuries after being held in police custody.
8. Charlie Hebdo Attack

A week after the New Year, two gunmen kill 12 people and injured 11 others during the attacks on French satirical newspaper, Charlie Hebdo’s offices on January 7.
7. Fight Against ISIS

The fight against ISIS continued in 2015 as people on Facebook shared news and information to better understand the actions of the terrorist organisation.
6. Marriage Equality

Ireland became the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriages through a popular vote. This went to effect other countries including Mexico and Japan.
This saw 26 million people on Facebook change their profile pictures to a rainbow filter to show their support for the LGBT community.
5. Greek Debt Crisis

This year highlighted Greek’s serious financial issues after Alexis Tsipras was elected prime minister on an anti-austerity platform. In July, Greece accepted a new bailout to avoid bankruptcy.
4. Nepal Earthquakes

April 25, Nepal was struck by an earthquake with a 7.8 magnitude. More than 8,800 people were killed. With extreme aftershocks, the country was hit by a second massive earthquake on May 12.
The world united and provided support and financial aid to the devastated country. Facebook donated more than $15.5 million from 770, 000.

Going on since 2011, the conflict in Syria has resulted in over 4.1 million registered Syrian refugees who have all migrated to neighbouring countries. People on Facebook came together to organise donations and support.

Most recently, the November 13 attacks saw a series of coordinated terrorist attacks on Paris that shocked the world.
This is has been the most deadliest attack since World War II. Millions of people around the world united against terrorism and changed their Facebook profile picture to France’s national flag in a sign of unanimity and support.
