Your Car Insurance Checklist For The Holidays

As the summer holidays approach and you prepare to take your family on holiday, we bet there is one thing you have forgotten to check – your car insurance. The festive season is rife with disgruntled policyholders who only discover the limits of their current car insurance policy when they have a car accident.

Elmarie Twilley of Virseker Verskering comments;

” Roads during the holidays are notoriously dangerous and extra precautions need to be taken. It’s, therefore, essential to have a multi-check on your vehicle to identify potential hazards, and prevent additional damage before it happens, at least two weeks before you leave to go on holiday “

Here Is Your Pre-Holiday All-Inclusive Car Checklist

In our previous article, What’s Covered In My Car Insurance Policy, we discussed the various types of car insurance cover. The limit of cover will be dependent on the type of insurance you have (Third Party, Third Party, Fire & Theft, or Comprehensive). Like any premium, there are ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ to every policy. And, each monthly installment is shaped around limitations and benefits. If you are travelling far distances this holiday, it is highly recommended that you reassess your car insurance policy and possibly look into taking out Comprehensive Cover (if you haven’t already).

In the warmer summer months, a build up of ‘holiday traffic’ can occur at any minute. Scorching temperatures can also mean a flat battery or overheated engine if you run your aircon for long periods of time. This, despite the increase in accidents over the festive period.

Insurance Checklist

Be sure to check if the following is included in your insurance policy:

  • Accidental and intentional damage
  • Towing service (should you break down)
  • Medical service (if you are involved in an accident)
  • Cover against theft, fire, explosions, and hijacking
  • Windscreen replacement
  • Free car hire (should your car be written off and you are far from home).

What Car Insurance Does NOT Cover

  • No licence while driving
  • Endorsed licence while driving
  • Invalid licence while driving
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Reckless driving
  • Unroadworthy car
  • Unauthorised use of vehicle
  • Keys left in and / or on the car
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Using car for commercial purposes or for racing

Car Checklist

It doesn’t help to just check your car insurance policy and not your actual car. Before heading on your road trip, be sure to check the following:

  • Car tyre tread and pressure
  • Engine oil level
  • Radiator oil level
  • Screenwash level
  • Brake oil level
  • Jumper cables packed in case of flat battery
  • All bulbs are in working order so you can see and be seen
  • Check controls and switches for lights, wipers, mirrors, and de-misters

Best case scenario would be to arrange your annual service to coincide with your holiday. If this cannot be arranged, most garages will offer an affordable review of things like brakes, exhaust, and drive belt. They will also check fluid levels for things like power steering, etc.
