IFA – the ultimate geek experience kicks off today

Dubbed, “the global trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances”, it presents the latest products and innovations. Essentially, it’s an opportunity for key retailers, buyers, industry experts and the media to explore emerging trends and celebrate the premieres of new technologies and products.

That said, it’s no surprise that IFA attracts the attention of trade visitors from over 100 countries annually.

According to IFA’s , “Never before in the 90-year history of the event have so many products made their world debut at IFA. More than ever IFA 2014 underlined its expertise in its role as the world’s meeting place for the industry and for exchanging information.”

And on the back of a hugely successful event in 2014 – this year promised to be bigger and better! The event did not disappoint and here are the 5 most fascinating gadgets unveiled at the event so far.

LG's EF9500

It might be just the best screen out there. The company's first 4K OLED TV offers significantly better images than other display technologies such as LED, LCD and the now-discontinued plasma. The 4K resolution should allow you to get a pretty sharp picture. OLED is difficult to manufacture, though, only large companies like LG (and Panasonic) are really able to do it.

Xperia Z5 Premium

Speaking of 4K, Sony wants to bring it from your TV to your phone (or maybe one day merge those two devices completely). I speak of the Xperia Z5 Premium, one of a trio of new phones that Sony showed in Berlin. It goes a step further than handsets like the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Sony Xperia Z3+ that just shoot 4K video by sporting an actual 4K display. That means you'll be able to shoot 4K video and watch it back at full resolution on the same device.

Haier Smart Window Refrigerator

A beautiful T-type fridge with a two-way panel on the door. Step close to the fridge and a motion sensor will activate a light inside that renders the panel transparent enough to let you look inside the Smart Window fridge without opening it.

A must-have for all narcissists! Not only can it digitally enhance your face to show you what you would look like with different makeup (in my case, with different types of beards, or mustaches), but it can detect your skin condition and recommend ways to improve it. It also includes features such as vital statistics check, magnifier and rear-view.

Samsung second-genration SmartThings Control Hub

The new version of SmartThings gets some useful feature upgrades — things like a battery back-up system, built-in video streaming capability, and a thoughtful cloud storage program for saving recorded video clips from a connected camera.

The IFA ends on Thursday, 9 September 2015.
