The South Korean giant instead unveiled new tablets – the Galaxy Tab S3, Galaxy Book 10.6” and Galaxy Book 12”.

The Galaxy Book series is focused on productivity, while the Tab S3 is a media consumption device.

The new Galaxy Books unveiled at Mobile World Congress have a variety of features including:

• HDR (High Dynamic Range) Video Content: Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy Book 12-inch support videos in HDR (10bit coloured)
• Samsung Flow: Samsung Flow makes working-on-the-go seamless. For a safe and secure login, Samsung Flow uses biometric authentication to log-in.; It can wirelessly tether compatible devices to transfer documents from a mobile device to a tablet. It also syncs message notifications so users never miss an important text message, whether they’re using a smartphone or their tablet.
• Refined S Pen:For a natural writing experience, the S Pen has a smaller 0.7mm tip and increased pressure sensitivity. The S Pen also includes convenient features such as “Screen Off Memo” to quickly jot down notes. It is also enabled with PDF Annotation for easy editing and professional-level drawing with Advanced Drawing Tools.

The tablets include a 13MP rear camera, with auto focus – and a 5MP front camera. The tablets also include expandable storage and fast-charge capabilities. It supports up to 12 hours of video playback on the Galaxy Tab S3 and up to 10.5 hours of video playback on the Samsung Book (12-inch). Both devices also support Pogo keyboards with no separate charging or pairing required.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

The Galaxy Tab S3 supports 4K video playback and has a Super AMOLED display. The Tab S3 is also the first Samsung tablet with quad-stereo speakers tuned by AKG by Harman.

Samsung says that the Tab S3 is optimised for gaming. It, therefore includes a Vulkan API and Game Launcher for an enhanced user interface and personalized gaming experience. It also has modes like “Do Not Disturb”, for uninterrupted game-play.

The Galaxy Tab S3 also has an enhanced S Pen. According to Samsung, this allows you to be more productive and lets you do multiple things at once.

The Tab S3 has 9.7-inch Super AMOLED display, a 13MP rear facing camera as well as a 5Mp front facing camera and a 6000mAh battery.

Price Hike

Cell C defended its decision in raising prices pinning it on the ailing economy.

In a statement released earlier in the year, they stated: “Rising inflation, the rand, US Dollar exchange, and uncertainty in the industry over the allocation of spectrum, have all contributed to an increase in the cost to provide mobile services to consumers”.

Low GDP growth, and the inflation rate, all played a role in the rising costs of the services. The end user would be paying for the increase in support costs and operational expenditure. This is simply a matter of keeping the service running.

From the beginning of February, customers found themselves spending that much more on calls, data, and SMS’s through the provider. SmartData Bundles have all increased. 25MB bundles rose by R2 to R10 and 500MB will now cost you R99 instead of R90. SmartData Contracts have risen, 500MB will now cost you R45 instead of R39. 10GB will now cost R349 instead of R299.

Telkom Bid

Cell C have recently been downgraded to junk status after missing payments. Ratings firm, Standard & Poor, have announced that the company will be downgraded from a CC rating to the lowest, D. The company missed interest payments in January 2017 on its €400m (R5.7 billion) in senior secured bonds, due in 2018. This naturally raised concern about the company’s ability to remain in active operation.

Telkom has, in the meantime, been eyeing out the company from the sidelines. News broke earlier in the month that Telkom were considering a R1 billion for the embattled company. This, however, seems to have fallen through last week. Cell C confirmed that they were starting transactions with Blue Label Telecoms. Blue Label Telecoms is currently in the process of acquiring a 45% stake in Cell C for R5.5 billion.

Cell C Chairperson, Mohammed Hariri confirmed; “Cell C’s board of directors would like to confirm that Cell C has already entered into legally binding agreements, in terms of which it has committed to a recapitalization transaction with, among other parties, Blue Label Telecoms Limited.”

Apple has included a pair of lightning adapter EarPods in the box along with a lighting adapter which allows you to plug in your 3.5mm headphones. But, let’s be honest, do you really want to have to connect an adapter to your iPhone in order to be able to listen to music AND charge your device at the same time?

The new lightning adapter EarPods appear to have a few control issues. According to a number of users, the volume controls and action button on the new lighting EarPods stop working after being plugged in. Some people have said that unplugging them and then plugging them back in appears to resolve the issue. Yet, this isn’t the case for everyone experiencing this problem. Apple has acknowledged the problem and stated that a fix will be coming soon in the form of an iOS 10 update.

Hissgate

Does Siri speak Parseltounge now? Who knows, but iPhone 7 Plus users have reported that the handset emits a low hissing sound while in use. There does not appear to be any word as to how many people are being affected by this, but it is a strange one. The sound doesn’t seem to be audible at a distance but some people have said that the hissing sound increases when the phone is operating under heavy pressure. For example, when the processors are performing under intense strain.

New Home Button

It might not look like it, but both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have a new home button. Apple has ditched the physical home button in favour of a capacitive, 3D touch home button. Many people are complaining that they don’t like the new home button because it doesn’t work when you’re wearing gloves. Also, you now have to actually press the button instead of just touching it and letting TouchID work its phone-unlocking magic.

Cellphone network operators MTN and Vodacom are challenging the introduction of new asymmetrical call termination rates.

These are the rates operators have to pay one another for calls to other networks. Icasa wants to implement a set of regulations that will see these rates drop to 10 cents a minute in 2016. But, for 2014, MTN and Vodacom will have to pay 44 cents a minute to smaller operators, while the smaller companies will have to pay only 20 cents, in an asymmetrical structure.

MTN and Vodacom want the 2014 regulations scrapped. Alternatively, they want interim relief to prevent the introduction of the new rates until they have been reviewed. A court ruling is expected on Monday (31 March) while Icasa’s implementation date is on Tuesday, 1 April.

In court documents, Cell C said: “The only realistic alternative available to Cell C in the event that there is no certainty around the effective date of the 2014 Regulations, would be for Cell C to increase retail tariffs more in line (although still below) those of the dominant operators.” “This would remove downward pressure on MTN’s and Vodacom’s retail tariffs, but also remove Cell C’s ability to grow market share.” South Africa’s third operator said that tariff increase would be a true structural change that would operate to the detriment of the consumer and the South African economy as a whole, “but it would be necessary in order for Cell C to remain in the market, albeit in a less sustainably competitive position”.

“The consequences of Cell C’s potential relegation to being an uncompetitive operator is uncertain (although of course it is clear that there will continue to be a MTN/Vodacom duopoly). However, this could still result in market failure,” it said. The group added that it is unlikely that such a structural change could be reversed even if Icasa should once again apply pro-competitive remedies.

The group said that a delay “impacts significantly on Cell C’s ability to finance further network investment and to offer further competitive services. I cannot emphasize too many times the significance of this as a concern of Cell C’s auditors and its financiers”.

“Any material delay in the implementation of the 2014 Regulations will, as a result, have additional devastating effects on Cell C’s business. These effects can be grouped into four main categories: creditors, customer care, network and technical matters, and negotiating power,” it said.

Our Thoughts On The Telkom FreeMe Package

We’ve tried out Telkom’s 20GB FreeMe Boost plan and this what we think. We used it for just over 3 weeks (a boost bundle / plan allows you to top up whenever you need to).

Selecting the plan was easy. All that was needed was a prepaid Telkom Mobile SIM card and sufficient airtime to cover the cost of the plan. In the case of the 20GB option, this was R599.

This is a fair amount of money to be forking over for a data plan, which does not come with a smartphone. But the benefits far outweigh the cost.

The 20GB plan gave us:

• 20480 MB of data (that’s just over 20GB)
• 500MB FreeMe Social Data (this is used for your WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media apps)
• 300 minutes to phone any Telkom Mobile or Telkom Landline number in South Africa
• 1500 minutes to phone any number on any cellphone network in South Africa
• 100 SMSs

500MB data for social media might seem like a little. But, it’s important to note that this data is used for your social media apps before any data is taken from your bundle.

The minutes included in the plan are not limited to a specific time of day. This means that you can use them any time of day, any day of the week. Without having to worry about whether it’s peak or off-peak time.

The One Downfall

Telkom’s FreeMe offerings are certainly impressive, however they are hindered by just one thing, the network itself.

Telkom Mobile does not operate on the same spectrum as MTN, Vodacom or Cell C. This means that where you might normally get cellphone coverage on those operators, you might not get coverage on Telkom Mobile. This is especially noticeable inside buildings where the signal can be spotty, or even non-existent, at times.

If you can live with this annoyance and have your own smartphone, then Telkom’s FreeMe is a no-brainer in terms of value for money.

FreeMe, unlike offerings from other mobile operators (such as Vodacom’s Plus plans), is available at the same cost. Whether you purchase it as a contract or as a prepaid deal. This means that if you are an existing Telkom Mobile customer, swapping over to the FreeMe plan is easier than falling out of bed in the morning.

Although similar to shaping, this is when the service provider will slow down the speed to the entire line. So, instead of slowing down certain sites when the line is under pressure, it rather reduces the speed of the entire line. You might be wondering why throttling and shaping happens. Think of it like being in a supermarket. If you are in a queue with six people in front of you, you will need to wait until it’s your turn to get to the teller. But, if you are doing your entire grocery shop and there is someone with two items, you will need to go to a normal teller, while they can go through the express counter.

This is the second fastest network you can buy. All cellphone internet uses capped, as there are no uncapped options available. Here is the down low on capped:

• It is faster than uncapped.
• Capped is more expensive than uncapped.
• You will pay more per GB.
• You only have the options of prepaid and capped. Prepaid carries over to the next month if you don’t use it but, with capped, you lose it if you don’t use it.
• Perfect for home and business use, but not if you are a very heavy downloader.
• Having capped is like having a business class ticket on a flight, you will be bumped up the queue boarding the plane.

Uncapped

This service is shaped and throttled more often than the capped service. You can request the provider to give you the policy of when and under what circumstance they shape or throttle.

• Uncapped is the lowest priority, which is like having an economy ticket and boarding the plane one by one.
• The monthly installment on uncapped is lower than capped.
• Uncapped is not suitable for business and is more for homeowners and casual internet use.
• It is perfect if you like to know exactly how much you are paying extra for data per month.

Leased Line/ Diginet

• This is the fastest on the internet and is basically like having a first class plane ticket. You will bypass the whole queue to the front.
• This, like a first class ticket, is the most expensive internet you can buy.
• You will be uncapped with no limitations.
• This is perfect for mission critical businesses, but not really for household use.

Researchers from that could replace the existing storage devices such as alkaline and lithium-ion batteries. With a reported global smartphone audience of 1.75 billion people, it is widely known that the battery life of smartphones is generally poor. While lithium-ion batteries take hours to charge, the prototype aluminium battery would be able to charge your smartphone in 60 seconds!

Stanford researchers believe that the new technology offers a safer alternative to many commercial batteries that are used today. In a report from the university, Professor of Chemistry, Hongjie Dai explained that alkaline batteries are bad for the environment and lithium-ion batteries, which take longer to charge, occasionally burst into flames. Two American airline companies, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, have effectively banned bulk lithium-battery shipments on passenger planes due to their potential fire hazard. Professor Dai claims that the new aluminium-ion battery will not catch fire, “even if you drill through it”.

Due to it being lightweight and inexpensive, aluminium has attracted the interest of battery engineers for many years; however a commercially viable product was never developed. One of the main challenges researchers faced during development was finding materials that are capable of producing sufficient voltage after repeated cycles of charging and discharging.

An aluminium-ion battery consists of two electrodes: a negatively charged anode made of aluminium and a positively charged cathode. While others have tried various kinds of materials for the cathode, Professor Dai said that they “accidentally discovered that a simple solution is to use graphite, which is basically carbon”. Dai added that in their study, they identified a few types of graphite material that gave a very good performance. The Stanford researchers involved in this experimental battery, placed the aluminium anode and graphite cathode, along with an ionic liquid electrolyte, inside a flexible polymer-coated pouch. Stanford graduate student, Ming Gong, who is also the co-lead author of the study, explained that “the electrolyte is basically a salt that’s liquid at room temperature”, which makes it very safe. This contrasts with the flammable electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries.

When the battery discharges, aluminium dissolves at the anode, while aluminium-containing ions slide into the spaces between atomic graphite layers at the cathode. When it begins charging again, the reverse occurs, depositing metallic aluminium metal back on the anode.

Another interesting feature of the aluminium battery is that it is flexible. According to Gong, “You can bend it and fold it, so it has the potential for use in flexible electronic devices”. Aluminium is also appealing due to its low flammability and high-charge storage capacity. Larger aluminium batteries could be used for storing renewable energy on electrical grids, which need batteries with a long cycle life to store and release energy.

Previous experimental aluminium batteries that were developed in other laboratories found that the battery died after just 100 charge-discharge cycles, whereas the Stanford aluminium battery prototype is able to keep on going for 7, 500 cycles without any loss of capacity. The standard lithium-ion battery only kept going for 1, 000 cycles. Researchers noted that this was the first time that an ultra-fast aluminium battery had been constructed with stability over thousands of cycles.

Stanford’s battery generates about two volts of electricity, which is the highest ever achieved with aluminium, however, this is nearly half of the voltage generated from the typical lithium-ion battery used with smartphones. As the battery is still in its prototype phase, Professor Dai feels that this can be resolved by improving the cathode material.

Battery technology has been the slowest of all technologies to evolve over the last 100 years, hence the mixed reaction over the development of Stanford’s prototype battery. “Aluminium batteries are very difficult technology and I think their method of storing the charges inside the graphite is rather clever”, said Professor Clare Grey, a materials chemist at the University of Cambridge. Engineer and inventor, Elon Musk is amongst the sceptics, taking to Twitter to comment on the announcement of the aluminium battery. Musk tweeted: “Battery ‘breakthroughs’ need to state power *and* energy density (not the same thing), plus how long they last. They usually fail on energy.”

Before this version of the aluminium battery can be mass produced, the team of researchers will have to improve the cathode material to increase voltage and energy density. The team has admitted that there is still plenty of room for growth within the project, but are aware of the growth potential in a battery like this. Commenting on this, Professor Dai said: “Otherwise, our battery has everything else you’d dream that a battery should have: inexpensive electrodes, good safety, high-speed charging, flexibility and long cycle life. I see this as a new battery in its early days. It’s quite exciting.”
